Xcel Energy is revitalizing a portion of our natural gas system in west Aurora by installing natural gas line and replacing service lines and meters in and around Dayton Street, between Montview Boulevard and 8th Avenue, for the Dayton Street Natural Gas Project.
This work allows us to continue to provide safe, reliable natural gas service and enhances system resiliency during extreme weather.
Construction is anticipated to begin in early 2026 and will continue through summer 2027.
Construction will occur Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. In certain circumstances, we may be required to work evenings or weekends.
Schedules are subject to change.
Crews will work as efficiently as possible to complete this project with the least impact to the community. We will contact you directly if your home or business will be affected by construction.
Installation will utilize both boring and open trenching construction methods.
- Boring uses a bore machine to create an underground pathway through which the line is pulled or drilled.
- Open trenching involves digging a trench and placing the natural gas line in the trench.
We do not expect interruptions to your natural gas service during natural gas line installation in roadways. Service interruptions may occur during installation of customer services lines which connect the mainline in the roadway with your gas meter. We will communicate with you directly if interruptions are needed and work to limit them to less than one day.
We will work to keep access to your home or business open or provide alternative access points if possible. We will contact you directly to coordinate changes if your access will be impacted.
Please alert on site traffic control staff if you need to access a location within a road, sidewalk or alley closure during construction.
During construction, you may notice:
- Traffic control.
- Marking of utility lines and utility survey holes.
- Road and sidewalk closures.
- Temporary changes to access.
- Construction noise.
We will restore work areas to conditions required by permits as weather allows. Work areas may be left temporarily restored after construction until we can complete final restoration.
It is important to know how to recognize a natural gas leak, so use your senses. Signs include:
- A “rotten egg” or sulfur-like odor, though it may smell differently to you.
- Hissing, whistling or roaring sounds outside near a natural gas line or inside near an appliance.
- Dirt spraying into the air or continuous bubbling in a pond or creek.
- Unexplained dead or dying vegetation.
If you ever suspect a natural gas leak, leave your home or business immediately. Once you are safely away, call 911, then Xcel Energy at 800-895-2999.
All Xcel Energy employees and most contractors who perform work for us carry company IDs. Ask to see a company ID if someone on your property claims to be working for Xcel Energy, regardless of the work being performed. If the person cannot show you an ID, ask them to leave and return only with proper identification.
